Willy’s primary obsession throughout the play is what he considers to be Biff’s betrayal of his ambitions for him. But unfortunately, Willy never understands this, and so goes to his grave never truly realizing where he went wrong. Charley and Bernard, who have success but not personality, prove to Willy that his notion is incorrect. Indeed, substance, not personality or being well liked, is what wins the day. The idea that “personality wins the day” is one such flaw in Willy’s logic. Thus, Willy is unable to cope with the changing times and the unfeeling business machine that is New York. Willy confronts Howard, his boss (and Miller indicates free market society), when he charges, “You can’t eat the orange and throw the peel away-a man is not a piece of fruit.” Here, Willy feels that Howard has gone back on his father’s word by forgetting him in his golden years, throwing away the peel after eating the orange, so to speak. Though Willy spends all of his adult life working for a sales company, this company releases the salesman when he proves to be unprofitable. Throughout his play, Miller seems to criticize this ideal as little more than a capitalist’s paradigm. One of Miller’s secondary themes is the idea of the American Dream. He is the only member of the family to finally escape from the poisonous grasp of illusion. Only Biff ever realizes who he is (“a dime a dozen”) and what his potential really is. Willy feels that he must live up to the standard that Ben has set, but this is found to be impossible by the end of the play. Willy’s brother, Ben, continually appears in the troubled man’s mind, offering hints on how to make it in the world of business. Though he’s a disrespected salesman, he calls himself the “New England man.” Though Biff has done nothing with his life by the age of thirty-four, Willy tells others and tries to make himself believe that his son is doing big things” out west. For years, Willy has believed that both he and his boys (particularly Biff) will one day be great successes. Though Linda, Biff and Happy are all unable to separate reality from illusion to some degree, Willy is the main character who suffers from this ailment. The most obvious theme is the idea of reality versus illusion. Death of A Salesman has several themes that run throughout the play.

Winston Smith is the everyman and is meant to serve as the audience surrogate. Winston Smith is also the name of a cat owned by a pro-choice activist in Stephen King's Insomnia. In a 1965 dramatization broadcast on BBC. In the 1956 film, Edmond O'Brien performed the role. In BBC One's Nineteen Eighty-Four (1954) Smith was played by Peter Cushing, and in a 1965 BBC adaptation by David Buck. The first actor to play the role was David Niven in a 27 August 1949 radio adaptation for NBC's NBC University Theater the next radio Winston Smith was played by Richard Widmark on a 26 April 1953 broadcast of The United States Steel Hour on ABC. The character of Smith has appeared on radio, television, and film in adaptations of the novel. As Winston realizes that he loves Big Brother, he dreams of a public trial and an execution however, the novel itself ends with Winston, presumably still in the Chestnut Tree Café, contemplating the face of Big Brother. Beyond his total capitulation and submission to the party, Winston's fate is left unresolved in the novel. By the end of the novel, O'Brien's torture has reverted Winston to his previous status as an obedient, unquestioning slave who genuinely loves "Big Brother". Any possibility of resistance or independent thought is destroyed when Smith is forced to accept the assertion 2 + 2 = 5, a phrase that has entered the lexicon to represent obedience to ideology over rational truth or fact. Terrified by the realization that this threat will come true if he continues to resist, he denounces Julia and pledges his loyalty to the Party. However, his spirit finally breaks when he is taken into Room 101 and confronted by his own worst fear: the unspeakable horror of slowly being eaten alive by rats. Winston remains defiant when he is captured, and endures several months of extreme torture at O'Brien's hands. However, O'Brien is an agent of the Thought Police, which has had Winston under surveillance for seven years. Believing they have met a kindred spirit, Winston and Julia join the Brotherhood. Winston soon gets in touch with O'Brien, a member of the Inner Party whom Winston believes is secretly a member of The Brotherhood, a resistance organization dedicated to overthrowing the Party's dictatorship. Winston meets a mysterious woman named Julia, a fellow member of the Outer Party who also bears resentment toward the party's ways the two become lovers. Whenever Winston appears in front of a telescreen, he is referred to as "6079 Smith W". Because of his proximity to the mechanics of rewriting history, Winston Smith nurses doubts about the Party and its monopoly on truth. This involves revising newspaper articles and doctoring photographs-mostly to remove "unpersons," people who have fallen foul of the party. Despite all of these flaws in his character but he believes the equality and freedom for everyone in society and displays courage by rebelling against the party.Winston Smith works as a clerk in the Records Department of the Ministry of Truth, where his job is to rewrite historical documents so they match the constantly changing current party line. He doesn’t have the ability to think reasonably. He has no one who is close to him, and lives almost his life as aloner. One main flaw that Winston has is the fact that he lives his life through fear. He is a loyal Party member, who works in the Ministry of Truth, where he changes historical records to fit the opinions of his leader, Big Brother. The protagonist is generally admired for his bravery, strength, charm, or ingenuity, while an anti-hero is typically clumsy, unsolicited, unskilled, and has both good and bad qualities.Winston Smith is a primary modern anti-hero in the novel 1984. Anti-hero is a literary device used by writers for a prominent character that has characteristics opposite to that of a conventional hero. The British version of the antihero emerged in the works of the "angry young men" of the 1950s.The protagonist in these works is an indecisive central character. The anti-hero became prominent in early 20th century. Abstract: An anti-hero is a main character in a story who lacks conventional heroic qualities and attributes such as idealism, courage and morality. Pope Benedict XVI described the cloth as an icon “written with the blood” of a crucified man.Īrchbishop Nosiglia noted that Turin and the ecumenical Taizé Community have a bond that has lasted for decades. When Pope Saint John Paul II saw the shroud in 1998, he said the mystery surrounding the cloth forces questions about faith and science and whether it really was Jesus' burial linen. Previous popes have also visited the northern city during earlier displays of the Shroud. “The Shroud,” he said, “attracts people to the face and tortured body of Jesus and, at the same time, urges us on toward every person who is suffering and unjustly persecuted.” “It urges us on in the same direction as Jesus’ gift of love.” However, at the end of the Mass in the square that followed, he regarded the Shroud as an icon of Christ’s love. Visiting the city, June 21-22, Pope Francis prayed silently for several minutes before the Shroud without any comment. The last time it was on display was from April 19 to June 24, 2015, in the cathedral of Turin. Next year will be the fifth time that the shroud will be on public display since 2000. There is no official teaching or dogma on the authenticity of the Shroud, which is housed in the Cathedral of Turin. The Taizé Community has chosen the northern Italian city of Turin as the venue of its next meeting of Europe’s young people, scheduled from December 28, 2020, to January 1, 2021. ***Please sign up for CBN Newsletters and download the CBN News app to ensure you keep receiving the latest news from a distinctly Christian perspective. The announcement of the extraordinary display of the revered cloth was made by Archbishop Cesare Nosiglia of Turin at Wroclaw, Poland, where this year’s annual meeting of Europe’s young people, known as the “Pilgrimage of Trust on Earth”, is currently taking place. That discovery implies that the Shroud of Turin spent extensive time in the Middle East. He said analysis of the shroud showed samples of pollen from the ancient region of Palestine, which could not have developed in Europe, according to Aleteia. Lastly, De Caro pointed to factors that could trace the shroud's migration from the Middle East to Europe. It would be more than desirable to have a collection of X-ray measurements carried out by several laboratories, on several samples, at most millimetric in size, taken from the Shroud." "Therefore, it can be repeated several times on the same sample. "The technique of dating linen by X-ray is non-destructive," De Caro noted. The scientist compared the Shroud of Turin with those samples and discovered that it best matched a piece of fabric from the siege of Masada, Israel, in 55-74 AD. The new X-ray analysis is said to be more accurate and less destructive than radiocarbon dating. He said the technique was used on various samples of historical fabrics that date from 3000 BC to 2000 AD. "This may have been the case in 1988, as confirmed by experimental evidence showing that when moving from the periphery towards the center of the sheet, along the longest side, there is a significant increase in carbon-14 (radiocarbon dating)."Ī website called Aleteia reports that De Caro further explained there's greater accuracy when data is obtained by using the WAXS method. "If the cleaning procedure of the sample is not thoroughly performed, carbon-14 dating is not reliable," he explained. "Fabric samples are usually subject to all kinds of contamination, which cannot always be controlled and completely removed from the dated specimen," De Caro explained to NCR. He said the carbon-dating method isn't great for fabric, explaining there are several possible reasons why the 1988 carbon-14 study may have been mistaken in its conclusions. The recent findings by De Caro contradict a well-known 1988 carbon-dating study which suggested that the cloth is around 700 years old. It depicts the image of a crucified man, and scientists and experts have studied it for a long time in an attempt to determine if it could have been the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. The shroud is located in the Cathedral of St. De Caro and his colleagues made the discovery by utilizing a technique called "Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering" (WAXS). Italian scientist Liberato De Caro told the National Catholic Register (NCR) that his fabric test shows the Shroud is roughly 2,000 years old. A new scientific method revealed that the Shroud of Turin may truly originate from the 1st Century, around the time of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. With the conflicting evidence surrounding artificial sweeteners, you may be wondering how you can get your fizzy fix while limiting your artificial sweetener intake. Additionally, the caffeine content of both sodas is low. However, both sweeteners are FDA-approved. The sweeteners in Coke Zero and Diet Coke - acesulfame potassium and aspartame - have been evaluated for potential negative health effects. Again, however, the evidence is unclear, and more long-term, high quality human studies are needed ( 8, 9).Īcesulfame potassium is also FDA-approved ( 7). Similarly to aspartame, acesulfame potassium has been evaluated for potential carcinogenic effects in both older and more recent studies. However, it’s worth noting that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers aspartame safe ( 7). Those who take a more cautious approach to ingredients in foods may want to avoid aspartame, and that’s OK. More long-term, high quality human studies are needed before we can connect aspartame to cancer ( 5, 6). In addition, some studies have indicated that aspartame may be carcinogenic, but other data contradicts this. While this effect may vary, it’s good to know ahead of time so you can connect the dots if you start experiencing headaches after drinking these beverages ( 4). Otherwise, they contain a relatively low amount of caffeine.Īspartame may cause headaches for some people, according to the American Migraine Foundation. If you’re highly sensitive to caffeine, though, you may want to watch your intake of these beverages. So, you’re unlikely to exceed the limit by drinking these sodas in moderation ( 2). That’s about 4 cups of coffee, or nine or eleven 12-ounce (355-mL) cans of Diet Coke or Coke Zero, respectively. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends that adults have no more than 400 mg of caffeine per day. However, caffeine and artificial sweeteners may negatively affect some people, even at moderate intake levels. Overall, their ingredient contents and nutritional profiles are similar.įor most, not many harmful side effects come from drinking carbonated beverages in moderation. It also uses an additional sweetener, acesulfame potassium, that Diet Coke doesn’t. Some say they cannot taste a difference, while others swear by either Diet Coke or Coke Zero as tasting closest to the “real deal.” SummaryĬoke Zero has less caffeine than Diet Coke. One debatable difference is the taste of these two drinks. However, both beverages are well below the recommended daily caffeine limit of 400 mg per day for adults ( 2). Coke Zero has less caffeine than Diet Coke. The other key difference is caffeine content. This means that these drinks are quite similar in terms of ingredients ( 1). Per Diet Coke’s ingredient label, its primary sweetener is aspartame, and since ingredients are listed in order by weight, it’s reasonable to assume that it contains much less acesulfame potassium. While Diet Coke uses aspartame as its sweetening agent, Coke Zero uses both aspartame and acesulfame potassium, also called “Ace K” or “acesulfame K.”Īcesulfame potassium is another calorie-free sweetener that passes through the body without raising blood sugar levels. What differs between the two is the type of sweetener they contain, as well as their caffeine content, although these two differences are still unlikely to be significant to most people. These products are essentially the same, especially in regards to their main selling point: not containing sugar. Key differences between Coke Zero and Diet Coke Like Coke Zero, Diet Coke also comes in a caffeine-free version. Regular Diet Coke uses aspartame, but you can also purchase a variety of Diet Coke that’s made with Splenda, a brand of sucralose.įlavor varieties of Diet Coke include ginger lime and feisty cherry. If you fail, find me on Twitter and I’ll prove how unstoppable these characters are. If you feel like dissing any of my selections, throw in 2K and try them out. Shots that never fall in real life, fall with regularity in 2K14. You might read some of the names on this list and dismiss them at first, but if you have ANY experience with 2K, you know the virtual hardwood is a different world than the real hardwood. The injuries make you really search through rosters and find the hidden gems–well we did that for you here. Plus, I had to take account the astronomical amount of injuries that have taken stars like Russell Westbrook, Derrick Rose and Chris Paul off of online rosters. This is a list where the dark horses of the game get some time to shine. Regardless, all these players are unstoppable in their own sense and in the right hands. I may be a little biased, because I have the unique ability to take players like Jimmer Fredette and Gordon Hayward and score 40-points with ease. Nothing like introducing a friend to a player they’ve never heard of by dropping jumper after jumper as the stat sheet fills up. My personal favorite thing to do in 2K14 is take a player like Gordon Hayward or Giannis Antetokounmpo and drop 40-plus with them against my roommate. Much like there is a “zone” in real life basketball that players get into, there’s a certain “zone” one can enter during a game of 2K, when all of those pull-up transition threes are dropping and every bounce seems to go your way. For me, it’s the ultimate source of competition in my college apartment. In recent years, the NBA 2K series has become the mecca of sports competition gaming–damaging friendships one Kevin Durant game-winner at a time. If they do grow, it’s because of sound nutritional practice and a nice dose of super supplements you can’t buy at your local GNC. Bodybuilders using the exact same exercises, sets, reps and weights every workout will not grow because of the repeated bout effect in other words, they never overload. If you use the same amount of resistance for the same number of repetitions every workout, there will be no continued improvement beyond the point to which your body has already adapted. People grow in size and strength from lifting heavy pig iron! The Overload Principle: To gain in strength, muscle size or endurance from any training, you must exercise against a resistance greater than that “normally” encountered. Putting it another way, it’s nothing more than a survival mechanism built into the genetic code of (at least) this species. All involve Mother Nature’s law of overcompensation as a stress response. This is why I love prescribing rest-pause training-slow gainers do more reps, fast gainers do fewer, and all perform to maximum intensity and derive benefits, regardless of who their parents are! The Overcompensation Principle: Callus builds up on your hands as an adaptive response to friction, muscle fibers grow in size and strength in response to training, and lacerated tissue develops “scar” tissue. Not everyone should perform the same exercise program they will not receive the same benefits at the same rate or to the same extent. Some are fast responders and others are slow responders. We all will have similar responses and adaptations to the stimulus of exercise, but the rate and magnitude of these changes will be limited by our differing genetics. The Principle of Individual Differences: This principle is an acknowledgement that we all have different genetic blueprints. We will examine the seven Granddaddy Laws and how they apply to us in the trenches. Great strength training systems adhere to the granddaddy laws, all else is folly. Fred Hatfield, in the mid-1990s, it is an absolute charade the granddaddy laws have not spread like wild fire. If designing and evaluating strength training “systems” was a steak dinner-the seven granddaddy laws would be the steak and uh….the potatoes! Organized and put on paper by my mentor, Dr. Jeremy Hoornstra knows if you don’t obey the grandaddy laws you get thrown in a prison of no gains. This can be through color coding, or a little heart, a sad face, a comment etc. Always try to leave some indication of what any form of annotation meant.ALWAYS HAVE A KEY! If you use symbols, colors, anything that has meaning… write down the symbol and it’s meaning IN THE BOOK so you will never be wondering what the hell blue, or purple, or this star, or daisy, or skull means.Your chosen colors might be perfectly sensible to you now, but future-you or someone else might just be lost without one. For example, I could underline something in Dead Poets Society, and all future-me might see is that that line meant something… However, if I underlined in green, for example, and had an annotation key, then every time future-me sees green she’ll know the past-me thought this was related to life and death. However, the upside is that meaning is added to everything you do. The downside is that you need many more tabs and highlighters and pens that you would without doing this. Yes, even if that paper already has words on it. No matter how many words you misspell or cross out, how “bad” your handwriting is, how “dumb” your comments are… they are worth, at the very least, the paper they are written on. Not only have you fulfilled this book’s purpose by reading it, you have gone far and beyond to get intimate with the author’s words, conspire with this book, and join the author in the creative process. Books go unsold in stores, end up in landfills, all the time. Think of the millions of copies there are of this book… yours is now unique. You aren’t “ruining” a book, you’re augmenting it. Please remember: your thoughts and feelings don’t have to be “good enough” to justify annotation. Annotating still feels taboo to some people. sticky notes (i like to have different sizes and colors). a pencil or pen (play around with colors!).Feel free to experiment and find out what works best for you in a variety of situations. There isn’t one most correct annotating style! I annotate differently when it’s for college, versus for my personal enjoyment, versus when I’m annotating a book as a gift for someone else. It may be for academics, personal use, or to share with someone. First of all, ask yourself why you are annotating. |
